For over twelve centuries, stained glass has been used to beautify churches, public buildings and homes throughout the world. The origins of leaded stained glass is unclear, but by the 10th century, artisans were adding glass to churches in England, France and Germany. Since that time, glass has been painted, leaded, foiled, layered, fused and slumped as each generation explores artistic expression in glass. Little has changed in all that time to the manufacturing of what we now call Art Glass. Made from melted sand mixed with minerals, Art Glass captures specific portions of the light spectrum allowing the human eye to see various colors. Gold becomes cranberry, cobalt becomes blue, silver creates yellows and gold, and copper makes greens and brick red. The real magic occurs, however, when the glass is crafted into a special stained glass piece and is lifted to the light. The glowing result is a testament to not only the unique qualities of the Art Glass, but also the military decoration from which the stained glass was crafted. |
